Beach Safety
May 5th, 2009 | By admin | Category: NewsSwimmers should always remember to adhere to the ten rules of beach safety;
- Never swim at unpatrolled beaches
- Always swim between the red and yellow flags as they mark the only area to swim
- Read and obey signs and instructions from lifeguards
- If you are unsure of surf conditions, ask a lifeguard
- Supervise children at all times
- Never run and dive into the water as depth changes regularly
- Avoid exposure to the sun by wearing sunscreen, hat, shirt and sunglasses
- Avoid swimming directly after a meal
- Never swim under the influence of alcohol
- If you get into difficulty, remain calm, call for help, float with the current and raise your arms for assistance
If you get caught in a rip, DON’T PANIC; paddle or swim parallel to the shore toward the breaking waves which should wash you back to the beach. DON’T attempt to SWIM AGAINST THE RIP, as even the strongest swimmers will tire quickly. If you do tire or become frightened, STAY CALM, RAISE YOUR ARM, CALL FOR HELP and WAIT for assistance.
